Rutile is a dating rutile accessory mineral that occurs in a wide spectrum of metamorphic rocks, such as in blueschists, eclogites, and granulites and as one of the most stable detrital heavy minerals in sedimentary rocks. Because common lead and the amount of molecular interferences vary by sample, energy filtering is not always used. This makes possible a U Pb normalisation procedure not reliant upon a common Pb correction that results in a significant decrease in the uncertainty contribution from the common Pb correction and better reproducibility of reference materials and unknowns for provenance analysis and other applications.
Direct dating of corundum and the establishment of age constraints for corundum crystal growth are restricted due to the absence of a geochronometer.
